Solskjær hopes to party like it's 1999

Ole Gunnar Solskjær remembers the brief instruction uttered by Sir Alex Ferguson as he waited to step out on to the Camp Nou turf for the closing stages of the 1999 UEFA Champions League final.

Last roll of dice

Manchester United FC were still trailing to Mario Basler's sixth-minute strike for FC Bayern München and Solskjær's 81st-minute introduction was a last roll of the dice. "We had made an habit out of scoring goals late in games that season, I scored a few of them so he didn't need to say anything. He just said, 'Go and do what you can do'," Solskjær recalled.

Dramatic climax

What happened next was the most dramatic climax in the history of the European Champion Clubs' Cup final. Bayern ribbons were already being applied to the trophy when, with 90 minutes on the clock, Teddy Sheringham struck United level following a David Beckham corner. With extra time beckoning, Beckham swung over another corner, Sheringham flicked the ball on and Solskjær stuck out a boot to scoop it into the roof of the net.

Treble

From a distance of ten years, the memories of that moment, of sliding on to his knees in celebration and being mobbed by his team-mates, have become a blur. "I can't really remember everything from exactly when I scored the goal or the celebrations. I remember players who had been substituted coming to celebrate, we were all celebrating a fantastic night," he said. With his goal, United had become the first English club to claim the treble of league, FA Cup and European Cup. "The best thing was the party afterwards, it was such a celebration.

Supersub

"Of course I will always be remembered for scoring that goal," he added. "It did not make me a better footballer, which was my main priority at the time, but now, ten years after, I realise how big a moment it was for the club." For Solskjær, now reserve-team manager at Old Trafford after his retirement in 2007, that goal sealed his reputation as the supersub par excellence. That 1998/99 season he hit eight of his 18 goals after springing off the bench – four in a 19-minute appearance at Nottingham Forest FC and a last-minute FA Cup winner against Liverpool FC. Did the former Norwegian international, now 36, ever regret his supersub status? "Maybe at the time when I was young I wanted to play more, but I made the decision to just put my career in the manager's hands and do what he said. Looking at the results I cannot complain about that decision."

'Fantastic manager'

A decade on and Sir Alex is getting the best out of a new generation of United players. Solskjær's admiration for this "fantastic manager" is obvious as he lists the Scot's attributes. "The knowledge of football, the experience, but also the hunger – he always wants to win, he wants to be the best. The way he treats his players, he manages them." And how does this latest crop compare with his 1999 vintage? "I was lucky enough to play in that 1999 team, it was the best team I ever played with, but at the moment we have a fantastic squad always challenging for trophies." With a third successive Premier League title under their belts, Solskjær is optimistic they can now retain their European crown with victory over FC Barcelona. "Of course I believe in Manchester United. We have a fantastic team who play great football and when it comes to the end of the season our experience could help us."

Timing

The UEFA Champions League final falls ten years and a day after United's Camp Nou triumph – which some of their supporters may claim as an omen. Solskjær said: "I hope so. It was a good omen for us in 1999 as it was Sir Matt Busby's birthday the day we won. He would have been 90. The club have made a tradition of making history at right time." Timing is something Solskjær knows all about.

Alves 'certain Barcelona will be champions'

FC Barcelona right-back Daniel Alves has had to deal with the disappointment of being suspended for the UEFA Champions League final, but he is sure he will soon have reason to celebrate as he looks ahead to Wednesday's showdown against Manchester United FC. "I am certain Barcelona are going to be champions," the 26-year-old Brazilian international says in this Q&A with uefa.com readers.

Was there ever a point in the semi-final against Chelsea when the team were panicking about reaching the final, especially with time running out and you being a goal behind?Fedon, 18, Greece

Daniel Alves: Yes, we obviously had doubts. But we couldn't be knocked out of the competition by a team that only had one shot on goal. It would have been very unfair. I think faith eventually conquered all the doubts – we believed until the end we could find a way out of the situation. Our coach is a very positive man; he made us believe. And in the end we had our reward.

Will the final be difficult to watch given your suspension?Wojciech ZdrojkowskiAlves: It is very difficult missing any game, let alone a game like this one. It is such a prestigious final. But I have to accept it and be happy that our team is in the final. I am certain Barcelona are going to be champions and hopefully I won't suffer much watching from the stands.
What will your role be in Rome? Jérémy Ravet, Provence

Alves: I will be just another squad member, as if I was going to play. The ritual is the same, the routines will be similar. The difference is I won't be in the dressing room when the time comes. But you know, there's no need to say anything to any of the players. In a game like that, motivation is already high.

Do you think the final will be an open game? And does United's attack concern you more than Chelsea's did?Christopher Mendes, 36, Trinidad, West Indies

Alves: I don't think it is going to be an open game, as people are saying. I guess United will be cautious and not as offensive as they've been throughout the season. They are going to respect Barcelona. Last year, at Camp Nou, they showed they know how to play defensively. Hopefully, it is going to be a very beautiful and attacking game, but I personally don't believe it is going to happen.

How does it feel to have won the league and Copa del Rey in your first season at the club?Jack Whitty, Ireland

Alves: After everything we've done, it is a reward. When the season started we had some difficulties. You never know if things are going to work out or not; there are always doubts. The trophies show we've found our way and it is amazing to win the domestic double in my first year here.

What has been your personal high point this season?David Kelly, Sydney

Alves: It is impossible to choose one. The season has been awesome – very, very positive.

Why have Barcelona struggled against English teams recently?Prodosh Sen, 38, India

Alves: Because English sides are physically stronger and they play very different football compared to the teams we usually play against.

How did you develop such a great rapport with Lionel Messi?Josh Son, 17, Fairfax, Virginia

Alves: He is a fantastic player on the pitch. And off the pitch he is a very humble boy, a very straightforward person. That makes it easy. Sometimes we meet up in our free time, do something together, have a chat. Messi is very shy and he likes to keep a distance from most people. You have to respect that. On the pitch, it is the easiest thing to combine with him – he is a marvellous player.

There are a lot of fans in Kazakhstan who support big European clubs, especially Barcelona. How does it feel to know people in far away regions are supporting you?Aleksandr, 22, Kazakhstan

Alves: It is tough to have an exact idea, but impossible to ignore. Yes, everybody who loves football will stop and watch the game on Wednesday. Hopefully we will give people in many different places, including Kazakhstan, reason to smile. Thanks a lot for the support.

Who is the most dangerous player you have faced?Tom Dodds, Philadelphia

Alves: I've faced too many. I would have to spend the whole day here telling you names and more names.

As a right-back myself, could you tell me the secret to being a success in that position?Cheng, 19, Netherlands

Alves: The secret is balance. In Europe it is a more defensive position, while in Brazil we learn to play offensively. I think Cafu and Roberto Carlos opened doors. When I arrived in Seville, people thought I was useless because I couldn't play defensively all the time. My coach then, Joaquín Caparrós, helped me a lot in learning positioning and gave me the freedom to develop my game. Alves: Cafu. Many people look at strikers, but I think a defender can be as important as a striker.

Who is your best friend at the club?Shane Whitehouse, Ireland

Alves: Sylvinho, because he is Brazilian, we speak the same language and he is a brilliant guy.

Will there be any special plan to stop Cristiano Ronaldo in the final?Loenard Mbaya, Ivory Coast

Alves: No, I don't think so. We have to be careful about their whole team. They are not a one-man side.

What is the difference between life in Seville and life in Catalonia?Ahmed Gaber, 22, Egypt

Alves: Basically, the beach. In Seville, people are more open, more similar to Brazilians. It gets very hot there during the summer. In Catalonia people are less open compared to Andalusia, but I've got the beach minutes away from home! That is an advantage, for sure.

What do you do to relax and switch off from football?John Smith, London

Alves: I spend time with my kids at home. They are three and one and it is a great age to play with them and have fun.

Osasuna loss fails to dampen Barça spirits.

Speaking after his team's 1-0 Liga defeat by CA Osasuna, FC Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola urged his players "not to let anyone down" in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League final against Manchester United FC at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Already crowned domestic champions, the Catalan outfit could afford to field a much-changed side at home against relegation-threatened Osasuna, who, after applauding their hosts on to the pitch, boosted their survival chances through Walter Pandiani's 26th-minute header. "We have to get to bed now as we've got a game on Wednesday," joked Guardiola afterwards, his dismissal from the dugout along with a red card for debutant Marc Muniesa long forgotten.

Crowd incentive

The 38-year-old then offered congratulations to his assembled players – including the injured Thierry Henry and Andrés Iniesta – and reminded the crowd of their achievement in securing a league and cup double. "I'd like to say well done to these players and to tell them that today they are celebrating two titles," he said. "I want everyone here on their feet. If there is anyone sitting down then get up. Give these players a big round of applause; they deserve it."

Treble chasers

After lifting the league trophy amid joyous scenes at the Camp Nou, Barça captain Carles Puyol – who along with Xavi Hernández, Víctor Valdés, Lionel Messi and Gerard Piqué played no part in the Osasuna encounter – offered his appreciation to the supporters. "Thanks for being there for us this season; it fills me with pride to see so many happy people," he said. "We've got two titles with the Liga and Copa [del Rey], now let's go for the Champions League." Meanwhile, Samuel Eto'o put the disappointment of failing to score against José Antonio Camacho's side behind him by insisting, "I'll run 80km next Wednesday if that's what it takes for us to win."

5월 23일 토요일, UEFA 챔피언스리그 결승전을 맞아 5일 간 펼쳐지는 세계인의 축구 축제가 유구한 역사를 자랑하는 로마의 중심부에서 막을 올린다. UEFA 챔피언스 페스티벌이라는 공식 명칭으로 개최되는 이번 행사는 파르코 디 콜레 오피오에서 열린다.

팬들의 마음을 끌 행사
UEFA 챔피언스리그 축제가 열리는 아르코 디 코스탄티노와 파르코 디 콜레 오피오는 오는 5월 27일에 열릴 결승전을 앞두고 전세계에서 모인 축구팬들로 인산인해를 이룰 것으로 보인다. 스타디오 올림피코에서 열리는 맨체스터 유나이티드 FC와 FC 바르셀로나의 결승전에 앞서 각종 전시회와 상품이 걸린 게임, 갖가지 오락거리가 팬들의 흥을 돋울 예정이다. 5월 23일 오전 10시(이하 중앙유럽표준시)에 공식적인 개막 행사를 갖는 이번 챔피언스리그 축제는 UEFA가 챔피언스리그 결승전 홍보대사로 임명한 전 AS 로마와 이탈리아 국가대표팀의 미드필더 브루노 콘티의 주최로 막을 올린다.
